Bird count set for Wednesday in Icelandic State Park
CAVALIER, N.D. — The annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, in Icelandic State Park, about 5½ miles west of Cavalier on North Dakota Highway 5.
Jay Wessel's Game Management Area will be the center of the count area, a 15-mile-diameter circle. Volunteers will survey portions of the area by vehicle with birder Mike Jacobs.
Participants will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Pioneer Heritage Center in Icelandic State Park. The counts will be tallied at 5 p.m. at the center.
Those who live in the count area are invited to participate by counting birds at their feeders on the same day. At-home bird counts can be called in to Icelandic State Park from 4:30-5 p.m. at 701-265-4561.
The data collected each year is used by researchers, biologists and wildlife agencies to study the long-term health of bird populations and guide conservation efforts.
