Sports Sunday January 7th: Area hockey players honored to be named to U.S. Olympic roster
WDAY/ WDAZ TV - The U.S. men's and women's Olympic rosters were announced this earlier this week and there is plenty of local flavor on each of them.
On the women's roster, Grand Forks natives Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux were named to the Olympic team for the third time in their careers.
Warroad native Gigi Marvin was also selected to the American roster for the third time in her career.
The trio has took home silver in the last two Olympics.
On the men's side, with the NHL not allowing players to go to the Olympics for the first time since 1994, that's opened up the door for Moorhead's Will Borgen, who was named to the U.S. Men's Olympic roster.
Borgen in his junior season at St. Cloud State. The former Spud has recorded a goal and seven assists this season with the Huskies.
This won't be Borgen's first time wearing the red, white, and blue. In the 2016, Borgen played for Team USA in the world junior championships, helping the team take bronze.
He tallied three assists and had a plus/minus goal differential of plus six in the world juniors.
All four will head to Pyeong Chang in February.
The first preliminary game for the US women is February 11th against Finland. The first game for the American men is February 14th against Slovenia.
